Students in grades 3-6 have been learning about careers this month at Hansen.
Third and Fourth graders have been exploring "Paws in Jobland," which is part of the "I Have a Plan Iowa" website. Continue this exploration at home by clicking on the link below and going to the portion of the site for elementary students.
Fifth graders worked together to create webs of occupations by starting with an object (i.e., soccer ball) and then brainstorming as many careers linked to that object as possible (i.e., design, manufacturing, transportation, marketing, sales, athletics, media, and health care, etc.). I have been impressed with students' ideas! We have had great discussions about how our interests and skills influence career decisions.
In sixth grade, students have been exploring the middle school portion of the "I Have a Plan" website. (Click on "middle school student," "career planning," and "explore careers.") They have learned there are over 1.5 million career categories in the world and have been investigating how their interests, strengths, and values will influence career decisions. Students are encouraged to keep up the exploration outside of school if they would like to.
In all classrooms, I have not encouraged students to choose a future career but rather, to open their minds to all the possibilities that are out there.
